Otago - About Programme Incubator
Currently the Southern District Health Board – Otago site have 5 secondary schools with 81 students participating in Programme Incubator. These schools are Bayfield High School, Otago Girl’s High School, Kaikorai Valley College, Kavanagh College, and Queen’s High School.
Visits include four 2.5 hour sessions. The first session is a classroom session at school which includes:
Looking at personality types to see what the student’s personality fits to which health profession;
A look at the 72 career options health has;
A chat with a HR Recruitment person to find out what makes your CV stand out to an employer, what you should put in your CV and cover letter, what to wear to an interview, questions that may be asked at an interview, answer phone and email protocol;
Two community people coming along and talking about their careers e.g. a community midwife, St John paramedic, a Plunket nurse, community physio, etc.
The other three sessions are at the hospital (either the main hospital in Dunedin or Wakari hospital. These visits include a tour of two departments where some visits are hands on and some are stand back and watch e.g. renal unit, NICU, labs, clinical records, ED, dental therapy bus, children’s unit, and many more. Also included in this visit is a presentation by someone from an area where we cannot go to e.g. pharmacy, sexual health nurse, psychology, etc. One of these visits may be a night session e.g. 5.30 – 7pm to areas that we cannot go during the day e.g. radiation oncology, vascular lab, x-ray department.
Year 13 students are offered work experience. This could range from a chat with some junior doctors over a lunch break to a day in the labs. This year we have arranged a day during the school holidays for students interested in nursing to do some basic general nursing duties. This day involves nurses from a nursing student, an enrolled nurse to a nursing director – so spans the spectrum of nursing.
